How to Choose a Moving Company

When a family is faced with a move, many emotions come into play. Of course there is excitement about the new home, fear about the changes ahead, sadness about leaving behind old friends and family, confusion about schooling options in the new location and much more! But one emotion that seems to be true for every potential mover is the dread of packing the house and physically moving all the contents to a new home.

While many people face this alone, or perhaps with the help of a few family members or friends, a growing number of individuals are choosing to hire a moving company these days. Moving companies will come to your home and, for a fee, box up all of your belongings, place them into a truck and move everything across town (or across the country!) to the family’s new home. For families in the military or with careers that transfer them frequently, hiring a moving company is the only way to go.

But how do you go about choosing a moving company? What things should you consider? How much does it cost? What will they do for you? Should you pack some items ahead of time?

First, you will need to decide which kind of moving company you need and find them in your location. There are companies who specialize in across town moves and others who specialize in packing your things to ship to the other side of the globe. Make a few phone calls and figure out who will work best for you. Ask around. Someone you know may have a recommendation.

Second, be sure that the companies you speak to are licensed and insured. It would be a tragedy to allow a no-name company to pack up everything you own and then find out that they stole it all. If they are licensed and insured, you will have some legal recourse if something turns up missing or broken.

Third, get estimates. While the fees to move your family will be sizable, there are wide ranges of what is considered standard, so make sure you get a couple of price quotes before you select a company. Remember, you often get what you pay for, so if you choose the cheapest company strictly based on price, you may end up realizing later why they were so cheap (poor service, slow speed, etc.) Local moves cost somewhere in the range of $100 per hour, while moving your belongings across state lines will move the cost up quite a bit, usually with a flat rate depending on the distance involved.

While movers will usually gladly move any household items for you, there are probably some items you will want to pack and/or move yourself. Items with sentimental value that you are uncomfortable leaving in someone else’s hands, for example, or items that might be considered dangerous (guns, ammunition, batteries, chemicals, etc.)

Choosing a moving company is a big decision and will likely cost you a good deal of money, but most people feel that it is a great investment! Happy moving!
